joe biden goes head to head with congressman paul ryan in the vice presidential debate. of course, our anticipation is heightened by the loss that the champ took in round one on wednesday night. president obama pulled a lot of his punches in his debate with governor romney, so if the original strategy was for biden to go in with a soft touch against paul ryan, we can be sure that that is going out the window. he is coming out swinging. gloves off. now, romney was able to dodge blows against his economic plan because actually there's not much of a plan there to jab at. take his strategy for economic recovery, to fill the revenue gap for a result from tax cuts is an exercise in shadow boxing futility. he hasn't yet told us what it is he's planning to do. but by hitching his wagon to paul ryan and endorsing ryan's budget plan, he attached himself to clearly articulated policy and a record that leaves the whole ticket exposed to attack which gives joe biden an opening to hit romney so hard -- to hit ryan so hard that mitt romney is going to feel it too. from the sound of it, the vice presi

report and with us from waution, jared bernstein, former economist for joe biden. it's good to have you here. jared, i start with you. as we look at these numbers, is this a true game changer for the president? >> it certainly helps. i mean, this month's decline in the unemployment rate that you have been talking about from 8.1% down to 7.8%, that's the good kind of decline in unemployment because it came from a lot more people getting jobs. if you recall back last month, i was sitting in this chair telling you that the decline in unemployment from 8.3% to 8.1% was illusory. it tells you, as i said, more people came into the job market and got jobs. but it also tells you that the monthly surveys are volatile. however, i think there's other evidence in this report, perhaps we can get into it, that shows some momentum moving in the right direction. the pace of employment growth appears to be accelerating in the payroll survey as well. >> ron, i want to ask you about jack welch's tweet about the books basically being cooked. you know, he's a ge pioneer. we know him well around 30 rock. >>

about joe biden he's the gift that keeps on giving. are you hoping that he's going to be giving a sprinkling of presents back to you guys? >> i don't know but i hope he repeats this latest one, where the middle class america has been buried for the last four years. right, joe. in fact, you might use that in your opening statement. by the way, personally, i've got to tell you something, piers. personally, joe biden and i have been friends for many, many years. i enjoy his company. he's a very good guy, personally, so it's not as if i -- but honest to god, he still is a heartbeat away from the presidency and when some of the things he says, you know, you're slack-jawed. but i think he'll be well-prepared for this debate. i would remind you, he didn't do that well against sarah palin, so -- but also, paul ryan is a real policy wonk. he knows all the details. so if i were advising paul ryan, and i am not, they just haven't asked for it, i would say be careful that you don't come across as somebody who gets down into the weeds about omb numbers and cbo and sequestration. a lot of the

think if joe biden is smart, he's going to use this and use some of governor romney's comments to put paul ryan in the corner. >> eliot: that's absolutely correct if one was trying to be as thoroughly objective as one might be but having lived through the fog of politics, objectivity and fact is in the eye of the beholder and therefore i think establishing what is true and what is fact will be difficult for either side going forward and governor romney certainly took the aggressive posture here. let's talk very quickly demeanor. tim, the president's demeanor many people thought was simply one of defense. he just -- he didn't seem to be the forceful advocate that he has been. do you agree with that? you said you watched it again today. did he strike you as being more affirmatively impressive than he struck us last night? >> well, you know, it sounded worse on the radio. so when i saw it on tv, it wasn't quite so bad. he really did kick it into gear at the end. so i don't think -- this is the first of three de

to watch out. >> and vice president joe biden was campaigning in iowa saying that mitt romney flip-flopped on his own tax cut plan that was the center piece of the gop campaign and biden challenged the republicans on the tax issue. >> you know the phrase they always use, "obama and biden want to raise taxes by $1 trillion. guess what? yes, we do in one regard. we want to let that $1 trillion tax cut expire so the middle class doesn't have the bear the burden of all that money going to the super wealthy. that's not a tax raise. that's called fairness where i come from. >> and last night on "politics nation," jared bernstein explained to al sharpton that the math in mitt romney's tax plan doesn't add up. >> if you're going to cut taxes 20% across the board, which is mitt romney's plan, you're going to blow a $5 trillion hole over ten years in the government's revenue. now, what governor romney says is i can make that up by closing tax expenditures and loopholes, but there's two problems with that. one, the arithmetic. if you look at people over 200,000, just look at the wealthiest co
